Video: AMG takes us behind the scenes of Ducati photo shoot
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Mercedes-Benz, Motorcycle, Luxury

Mercedes-Benz has cobbled together a behind-the-scenes video chronicling a photo shoot with two stars: the 451-horseepower C63 AMG Coupe and a Ducati 848 in matching white. Deviating from the behind-the-scenes template, this one is more like a series of rushes set to music. In addition to the mechanical eye candy, a pair of models feature prominently (as suggested by the screencap above). The action takes place on an Iberian runway, and you'll find it after the jump.

Filed under: Car Buying, Etc., Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, Toyota

Today's vehicles are more powerful, more efficient and safer than ever before. In fact, today's car buyer would be hard pressed to spend his or her money on a genuinely bad vehicle. But those overall improvements may have also led consumers to believe there are no real differences between the various products offered by the world's major automakers. According to the Consumer Reports 2012 Car-Brand Perception Survey, Toyota, Ford, Honda and Chevrolet have all seen their scores drop by double digits compared to last year.
The survey asks consumers to rate brands across seven categories. Consumer Reports says that by combining those categories, the organization can get a handle on how each brand is perceived in the marketplace.
This year, Toyota continued to lead in the survey, though its persistent recalls saw the brand's perception fall by 17 points this year. Ford, Honda and BMW all saw their perception scores plummet more than 20 points. The results may indicate consumers are seeing fewer differences between automakers as products continue to improve. While that's good news for smaller automakers like Hyundai, Kia and Subaru, larger names in the industry should be worried. Head over to Consumer Reports for the full report.

Permalink | Email this | CommentsUnderstanding China’s Car and Vessel Tax
Up until recently the burden of taxation was pushed onto farmers, now Chinese farmers are nothing compared to American farmers that have massive swathes of land for as far as the eye can see in the Mid West, Chinese farmers are mostly substance farmers with small tracts of land that are mostly toiled by hand. With the growing Chinese middle class the burden of taxation is moving up the pay scale, farmers no longer pay land tax but the government has to collect tax elsewhere to offset the loss at treasury coffers, thus the government turned to ‘luxury items’ such as pleasure craft and vehicles.
Tax on cars has being going up in recent years, originally the ‘Yang Lu Fei‘ was used and then abandoned. The Yang Lu Fei which literally means ‘care for the road tax’ was paid monthly and went off the weight and no of seats in your vehicle, a 5 seat mini car paid around 100rmb per month, larger 7 seat vehicles around 200rmb. Eventually this was scrapped and rolled into gasoline prices which made for an easier system, car owners no longer had to pay a monthly tax and random roadside tax inspections ended.
The new tax system is called the Car and Vessel Tax, a clumsy name but nevertheless it is a much needed tax, tax is counted as follows:
(1) Taxpayers
Taxpayers include enterprises, units, individual household businesses and other individuals who possess and operate vehicles and/or vessels within the territory of the People’s Republic of China (excluding enterprises with foreign investment, foreign enterprises and foreigners).
(2) Tax base, tax amount per unit and computation of tax payable
Taxes for vehicles and vessels are calculated slightly differently:
a. For vehicles: 60 to 320 yuan per passenger vehicles; 16 to 60 yuan per ton ( net-tonnage ) for cargo vehicles; 20 to 80 yuan per motorcycle; 1.2 to 32 yuan per non-motorized vehicle.
b. For vessels: 1.2 to 5 yuan per net tonnage for motorized vessels; 0.6 to1.4 yuan per deadweight tonnage for non-motorized vessels.
So who is excluded from this tax? Of course government organs and military appliances don’t to pay, yes, the government with the largest fleet of vehicles in the world is exempt:
Tax may be exempt on the vehicles and vessels self-used by governmental organs, people’s organizations and military units; the vehicles and vessels self-used by units financed by financial fund allocation; the fishing vessels with a deadweight capacity not in excess of one ton; the pontoons and floating docks used exclusively for passengers, the loading or unloading of cargo and the storage of goods; the vehicles and vessels used by police department, fire department, health department and environmental department; the vessels subject to payment of Vessel Tonnage Tax according to Rules; special vehicles designed for the convenience of the handicapped; and the tractors used mainly in agriculture production.
What does this mean in the real world?
Taxes will look like this per year for automobiles in 2012:
- Sub 1.0L vehicles – 300RMB
- 1.0 to 1.6L – 420RMB
- 1.6 to 2.0L – 480RMB
- 2.0L to 2.5L – 900RMB
- 2.5L to 3.0L – 1,920RMB
- 3.0L to 4.0L – 3,480RMB
- 4.0L and above – 5,280RMB
Taxes will be collected by insurance companies on yearly premiums and will form the basis of all insurance policies in 2012. The new taxes are aiming to steer Chinese car consumers away from large displacement vehicles and into smaller more fuel efficient models. For example, the Ford Mondeo originally came with a 2.3L engine but later came with a 2.0L Ecoboost model, older 2.3L Mondeo’s will have to pay a tax of 900rmb but the newer more powerful Ecoboost models will be eligible for 480rmb of taxation. The big winners from this tax policy are those companies that already have a turbo powered models on the market, such as VW’s TSI range, Chinese manufacturers are playing catch up but the days of using off the shelf 2.4L Mitsubishi engines are over.
The vessel tax is not aimed at common small scale fishing vessels but at the rise of large yachts, the Chinese yachting industry has grown rapidly in the past few years as yachts have taken over cars as the number one way to flash your cash.

Report: Fiat dishes up more information on 500L five-door
Filed under: Budget, Etc., Crossover, Fiat

Fiat has served up a few more tidbits on the upcoming 500L five-door expected to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. According to Automotive News, the vehicle will feature a taller roof than the thee-door Fiat 500, and while the two sill share a front fascia, the larger vehicle will ride on a widened version of the same chassis that underpins the Fiat Punto. All told, the Fiat 500L will be around 163.38 inches long, which is around 2.36 inches longer than the current 500.
Interestingly enough, Fiat plans to introduce both five-seat and a seven-seat version of the 500L in the near future, though American buyers are only likely to be able to enjoy the former configuration. The 500L is expected to touch down on dealer lots in Europe in July, while Americans will have to wait until early 2013 to plop themselves in the driver's seat.
In Europe, the vehicles will likely be available with with a turbocharged two-cylinder 900cc gasoline engine with 85 horsepower as well as a 1.4-liter four-cylinder good for either 77 or 105 hp depending on configuration. A 1.3-liter diesel will also be an option across the pond with either 75 or 99 hp. Odds are American buyers will simply see the 1.4-liter Multiair four-cylinder on their option sheets.

Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Aston Martin, Specialty, Middle East, Luxury

A howling red prototype of the Aston Martin's V12 Zagato made the international rounds last year, and now the first production example is headed for a Middle East reveal at the Kuwait Concours d' Elegance (running February 15-18). Only 150 of the super-exclusive Astons will be made for worldwide consumption.
Aston Martin hasn't released any new photos so we don't know how the 510-horsepower, £330,000 (that's $550,000 U.S., before taxes), aluminum-and-carbon-bodied coupe will differ from its progenitor. If the model on display at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show is an indicator, though, the spoiler on the beauty in the above pic has been swapped for a redesigned trunk lid.
We'll know more in a few weeks, so until then there's a press release after the jump and a couple of image galleries for you to enjoy.

Filed under: Motorsports, Safety, Technology, Videos

It's common for people to consider the head and neck safety device, or HANS device, a millennial item, something developed ten years ago or so. But it was actually conceived after an accident in 1981 and the first prototype was donned in 1986. It sold only sporadically throughout the 90s, but after Dale Earnhardt died in a crash at the 2001 Daytona 500 - coincidentally, of the same injury that lead to the HANS device's creation - it went from oddity to obligation in every major racing series.
Car and Driver looks at the physical numbers behind the device: in a 40g head-on collision, a HANS device can reduce total neck load by about 75 percent, to less than half the force of the injury threshold. That's not bad for a one-pound contraption made of carbon fiber, padding and a fabric-and-polyester strap.
Click here to check out the C/D piece, and follow the jump for some enlightening visuals on just what the HANS device can do. There's a video of a test crash with and without the device fitted, as well as the different kinds available and the story behind them.

When you hear the Shelby name, the first person who comes to mind is likely Carroll, father of the Cobra, racing legend, and a man still involved in the development of performance Fords at nearly 90 years of age.You probably don't think of Jerod Shelby, even though his company, Shelby SuperCars, has for years been building cars that compete for the title of world's fastest. His latest creation, the Tuatara, might steal the title back from the Bugatti Veyron, but in the meantime has proven to be very popular in the Middle East.
Problem is, the automotive world isn't big enough for two companies named after a Shelby, and so it has come to pass that Jerod's company will change its name from Shelby SuperCars to SSC North America. The switcheroo is reportedly a result of a settlement with Carroll Shelby Licensing and Carroll Shelby International.
With that behind him, hopefully Jerod can get back to the Veyron-beating business. His company has also just broken ground on the new 36,000-square-foot world headquarters and production facility in West Richland, Washington we reported on a few months back.

BMW and Boulder, CO-based energy management company Tendril will build a demonstration home designed to power BMW's ActiveE electric vehicle while minimizing the home and the car's carbon footprint, the New York Times reported.
The home, which will be built at BMW's San Francisco Bay Area technology office by this March, will have "smart" thermostats, solar panels and appliances, the newspaper said, citing the companies, which didn't disclose how much the house will cost to build. The home will manage energy delivery to minimize power usage during the costliest times on the grid.
The German automaker is joining Toyota and Nissan among electric-drive car makers that are building demonstration homes geared towards getting data on "smart" energy usage. Last August, Nissan started selling a home system in Japan that allowed the Leaf to be used as backup electricity-storage system for homes. The Leaf, if it starts with its 24-kilowatt-hour battery fully charged, can supply enough electricity to power a typical Japanese home for about two days, Nissan said at the time.
BMW last week delivered its ActiveE electric vehicle to its first U.S. customers, as the German automaker enters the next phase its domestic EV testing after the Mini E. The car will be available in Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, New York, Boston and Hartford, CT, at a rate of $499 a month with a $2,250 downpayment. Open enrollment for the program started this week.

Permalink | Email this | CommentsVideo: Dad disapproves of son's 530-horsepower MR2
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Etc., Videos, Toyota, Humor

Reaction vids certainly aren't in short supply. Whether it's a mom screaming her head off during a hot lap of Laguna Seca, a little boy freaking out over the silent rush of acceleration in a Tesla Roadster, or a wife screaming expletives at her husband in Italian during a Sunday spin in a Honda Civic Type-R, these candid-camera-style videos are usually good for a few laughs.
More recently, the meme has been slathered with sex appeal to attract even more eyeballs. There's this well-known example, plus someone on YouTube who just has pretty girls ride shotgun as he takes them for a ride.
We like it best when the passenger's reaction is honest and unscripted, though. Like this example, in which a son takes his father for a ride in his pride and joy: a 530-horsepower Toyota MR2. Shot back in 2010, it's not new, but we'd never seen it before and still get a kick out of the father's response.
Take a trip with Dad after the jump to see for yourself.

The emergence of Chinese Joint Venture Brands
The Chinese automobile market is maturing with growing competition and emerging new market segments, as well as new consumer groups (Kasperk et al. 2011, Gadiesh, Leung & Vestring 2007). The automobile companies present on the Chinese market cope with the upcoming changes in combined efforts of their established joint ventures. Those have been the premise for foreign carmakers to participate in the market, while at the same time supporting Chinese companies with technology and process-knowledge transfer (Kasperk et al. 2011, Deng & Ma 2010). Now these joint ventures are being carried to a new level in developing automobile brands together. Regulations of the Chinese government for building new plants and its goal of building global brands drive companies to encourage in such a joint venture brand development.
In 2010 and 2011, several major carmakers, have announced cooperations with a joint venture partner in establishing a new brand for the Chinese market. Already existing brands stemming from such efforts are Shou Wang (BAIC and Hyundai) and Wuling (GM, Liuzhou Wuling Motors, and SAIC). The confirmed announcements of new joint venture brands are aggregated in the following overview. Rumors furthermore suggest a joint venture of Chery and Jaguar.
All of the joint venture brands announced include manufacturing in China. In case of Chana and PSA Peugeot Citroen the two companies are going to develop joint R&D centers which are aimed at potentially providing saving potentials. Chinese companies in addition have the advantage in creating a joint venture brand to learn from foreign car makers in this field, also thinking of Chinese car makers’ strive for internationalization. Developing a new brand might be even harder and more time-intensive, than developing a new technology (thinking of the example of Volkswagen’s Audi). Risks and resource inputs in developing a new brand are reduced in doing so within a joint venture.
For many foreign companies still struggling with manufacturing low-priced cars, this is a major goal of the new brand development. With a new brand, the own brand of a foreign car maker is not impacted by brand value erosion when aiming at a lower segment, at the same time the cars in the new brand still can be sold to the Chinese middle class market (about 40% of the total market) with regard to a famous mother company’s brand. The German car makers focus on electric cars, to learn from their Chinese counterparts (BYD and Daimler) and to test concepts in a market that is relatively responsive to the concept of E-Vehicles.
Therewith a bridge might be built over those conflicting tendencies, also adhering to individual characteristics and the price sensitivity of consumers in rural areas. High-priced cars in the near future are likely to continue to be in the hand of foreign brands. Dongfeng and Honda’s car specifics of creating a brand to target low- and high-priced markets seem to not fit, still more Chinese brands and joint venture brands might target the luxury markets for its growth potential.
The wave of new joint venture brands will help the Chinese market to become more mature and make use of synergy effects and knowledge transfer on a process level above technology and manufacturing. 2012 and 2013 will reveal to what extent Chinese and foreign car makers will utilize the potentials of new brands and how their competitiveness in the Chinese market will be strengthened.
